Why Recurring Beats One-Time (With Math)

A 30% recurring program out-earns an 80% one-time payout in under six months. Here's the exact arithmetic.

The most common mistake I see in new affiliates: chasing the biggest percentage instead of the longest tail.

Take two programs. **Program A** pays 80% one-time on a $29/month product — $23.20 per referral, once. **Program B** pays 30% recurring on a $49/month product — $14.70 per month, for as long as the customer stays.

Month one, Program A looks great: $23.20 vs $14.70. But Program B pays again in month two. And month three. SaaS customers on annual-friendly tools retain for 12–18 months on average. At 14 months retention, Program B has paid you $205.80 per referral — **nearly 9× Program A** — from the same initial effort.

The catch, and it's a real one: recurring programs usually have stricter approval and slower first payouts. You're trading speed for compounding. The right play is a barbell — one easy one-time program for cash flow while your recurring stack builds underneath it. Run the numbers with actual retention data (most program pages publish it, and our review pages collect it), and you'll rarely choose the big one-time check again.
